My name is Jamie Cook , I am 26 years old and live in Liverpool. I have 2 babies Annabel 5 and Oliver 2. I am the sole founder of brand Dorathy & J and work there full time. I never had a clear idea of what I wanted to be growing up I got the relevant GCSE's to get me into a college in Wigan I was aiming to complete my A-levels in. I then received a A* in Law, A in biology and B in maths meaning I could go on to study Physiology at the University of Liverpool. I left without completing my degree in my 2nd year and went to work at Barclays Bank until June 21. In my 2nd year of working at the bank and roughly 1 year after having Annabel I decided to start my side hustle. Facts about me:
I love pale rose, eating out and online shopping. My favourite 3 places are home, the Lake District and Ibiza. I am such an introvert but very social online. My favourite colour is green. I am a workaholic. I am a huge family person. I never skip breakfast. Addicted to Costa Coffee, Instagram and my kids.
In October 2016, I started a brand called Dotty Fourrure and sold fur pom pom keyrings. I sewn ribbons and customised them with initials. Considering I created a whole brand based on key-rings, there was a huge demand and people still ask if I make them today.
I didn't see a future in fur and rightly so. I had already started selling accessories on the side to bulk up orders and decided to rebrand in September 2018. My new brand, Dorathy & J would sell dainty jewellery and focus on stacking, which I loved.
Although people around me thought it was a bad idea to rebrand I had a gut feeling and I have never looked back since. In the following year I gained 10k followers and traveled to places like Ibiza and Paris for photoshoots.
At this point the pandemic hit and I took the opportunity to work harder than ever knowing online growth in these circumstances was so attainable.
Our instagram following is still relatively small but something I'm so proud of and we have created what feels like a community online.
I am always being honest and personal with my followers and customers and feel like we have such a strong bond! This is definitely my greatest achievment at D&J.
My long term plan had been to leave my day job and run my business full time and whilst I was growing in a positive direction I knew it weren't enough to keep me going in the quiet months. I decided I would need a side hustle to my side hustle and wondered what was a nice I could train in. My business was already based around ear stacking and there aren't many chic places to get pierced so I decided I would train to be a piercer.
I have never grew up wanting to be a piercer or had it ever crossed my mind that I would be. I knew I wanted to train in needle body piercing and that's why I done. I passed the course in December 19. but didn't take a customer appointment until a lot later thanks to the pandemic.
Piercing is definitely a passion I didn't know I had. I absolutely love transforming peoples ears and seeing their face when they look in the mirror at their brand new piercings.
